Why we need it?
Our teenagers keep telling us they need more activities on weekend nights. And more healthy energetic activities.
Why is this a solution?
Midnight Basketball is a fun social basketball competition held late on Friday or Saturday nights in a safe environment over 8 weeks each Tournament for all teenagers.
What is its track record?
Since its inception in Australia, over 250 Midnight Basketball Tournaments have run nationally with over 150,000 teenage attendances, 50,000 volunteer roles contributing hundreds of thousands of hours, 160,000 hot, nutritious dinners and 6,000 mentoring and skills sessions. Midnight Basketball has proven to be a successful model, reflected in the huge numbers of communities and individuals who have got involved. "We are proud and excited to be re-launching with a new and more exciting format. Also our updated online system will make it so much simpler for communities to run. We look forward to seeing old and new faces come along and get involved,” says Tess White, Chief Executive Officer of Midnight Basketball Australia. "While Midnight Basketball Australia provides a lot of support, its real success is highly dependent on the extraordinary people from local communities who bring the heart to our Tournaments. Everyone can help in some way."
Getting started
The first step will be creating a Midnight Basketball MtDruitt volunteer Management Team. To be most successful and sustainable, this will be made up of organisations and individuals from a wide range of community groups and sectors, including local businesses, community groups like Rotary and Lions, Local, State and Federal government, youth and family services, sporting groups and also welcoming all individuals in our community. This range brings different experience and opportunities to the Tournaments.
Organisers are seeking
- Volunteers to join the local Management Team to oversee the Tournaments locally - from Chair to Logistics, Volunteer, Player, Finance, Marketing and Support Managers we can match a role to your experience.
- Volunteers for tournament nights - for tasks like helping to serve dinner, coaching, teams, scoring, refereeing, driving or supervising the buses and other roles to suit you.
- Other support for Midnight Basketball whether financial or in-kind.
- Previous Midnight Basketball Players - if you played Midnight Basketball years ago, now’s your chance to not only learn a lot by volunteering but also to give back — as a volunteer, mentor, or coach. It’s your turn to lead the next generation. You can help us bring the energy back to Friday and Saturday nights — and you can help a new generation of teenagers connect, grow, and shine. Join the online forum to see how to volunteer.
Join us at the forum and see how you can help to make this happen.
