Midnight Basketball SunshineCoast starts and already scoring goals

Midnight Basketball is underway in SunshineCoast, attracting lots of players and with up to 20 volunteers helping each Tournament night.

Midnight Basketball SunshineCoast is organised by a local Midnight Basketball volunteer Management Team comprising members from across the community, a hallmark of its community building success.

Starting around 7pm on nights, the 8 week Midnight Basketball Tournament is being held at TBA culminating with an always thrilling Grand Final Night on Week 8.

“Midnight Basketball is proving to be a successful model. While basketball acts as a magnet to attract the participants, it is what happens during the night that is the key to providing new life skills and opening up future opportunity. Special guests and mentors from all walks of life also provide a range of lessons and bring their own wide range of experience which is both motivational and inspirational for local teenagers,” says Tess White, Chief Executive of Midnight Basketball Australia.

Midnight Basketball has unique qualities at two levels - the game of basketball is crucial to its success because as a team sport it includes the opportunity to build leadership and teamwork skills, behavioural improvement, fitness and focus. Engagement occurs around the sidelines, through the volunteers and members of the community who turn up and get to know the teenagers and vice versa.

Chair Sharon White, said today "The response to Midnight Basketball in SunshineCoast has already been tremendously encouraging. We are seeing a high level of interest and energy from all parts of our community. The teenagers keep turning up and having a great time and the nights are being run smoothly by a team of Tournament night volunteers who register to help out each week,” for which we are eternally proud and thankful.

Midnight Basketball Tournaments run for 8 weeks and start at 7pm with a nutritious dinner, three or more competition basketball games with skills sessions, music and bus ride safely home by midnight.

Midnight Basketball is community-driven and embodies our philosophy of combining team sport with learning and wellbeing while embracing positive opportunities by filling a gap on Friday and Saturday nights, with local volunteers coming together to provide inclusive, healthy, safe, motivating and free tournaments in local basketball stadiums.
Midnight Basketball enables and empowers effective relationship and community building within each local community.

Midnight Basketball Australia provides an automated, out of the box online solution, for approved communities to run low cost, volunteer-run tournaments embracing a diverse 'whole of community' approach to enhance social cohesion and wellbeing. It is replicable, making it a nationally scalable and sustainable model, designed to maximise the number of communities and teenagers that it can support.
Together, we are also helping to provide a positive real alternative to end the culture of binge drinking on weekends.
